さて、ところで、これからが、面白いのだ。これまでに終わったことは、全部、重要ではない。少なくとも、大して重要ではない。予備選は終わり、駆け出しのボクサーらは至る所で行われる興行の前座に駆り出されている。そして、レーバーデー（労働者の日：９月の第１月曜日の休日）が過ぎて、候補者ら、そして、もっと大切な有権者らは、大統領を選ぶという厳粛な仕事に、本腰を入れて取り組むことができるようになった。

　評論家や、選挙マニアや、それに、コンサルタントらは、候補者らが、帽子をリングに投げ込んだ時から、大統領候補者ら、エージェントら、ロビイストら、資金調達者らの一挙手一投足を分析する。一方、支えなければならない自分の生活を抱えている有権者らは、今になって、ようやく、ホワイトハウスに誰を据えたら良いかについて考え始めるのだ。

　過去数カ月の間に、また、いつもの議論の中に放たれた大抵のオピニオンは、取り上げるにはあまりにも青臭いものだった。そして、世論調査のように、オピニオンも、有権者らが彼らの投票行為の結果がどうなるか、より深く考えるようになるにつれて、変わるものである。

　クリントン株式会社にとっては、これは朗報にはなり得ない。なぜなら、そこでは、経験不足の実業家、ドナルド・トランプのような人間が指名されたことは、信じ難いほど素晴らしいことだと言って、祝杯を挙げていたからである。しかし、今では、ほとんど勝ち目もなく、また、予想を裏切って、彼の歯に衣（きぬ）着せぬメッセージ――経済の再建、優良な雇用の創出、国境における法の回復、そして、米国第一主義――は、明らかに、ますます増える有権者の共感を呼んでいる。11月８日は、依然として、まだ先のことだけに、多くのサプライズも期待できる、希望の日なのである。１カ月前には、ドナルド・トランプを信じていなかった多くの共和党員がこの男に好感を持ち始めているのだ。ヒラリー・クリントンは、つまずき続けており、彼女の貪欲な性質に対する疑問、国家の利益よりも彼女自身の利益を優先すること――そして、今では、ほんの２週間前には、ほとんど人の立ち入りを禁じていた彼女の健康など――が、強く結び付いて、大きな問題になっている。

　約１カ月前には、共和党を壊滅状態にしかねないようなクリントンの地滑り的勝利を予想していた世論調査は、厳しい見方をするようになった。最も新しい調査の中の幾つかは、厚顔で、喧嘩（けんか）腰のドナルドにチャンスありとするばかりか、優位に立つだろうと示唆までしている。ヒラリーの取り巻きらは、早まって大喜びしたかと思うと、何事も当然と思わないで見る冷静な注意を喚起されたりしている。ヒラリー自身は、しきりにひどいことをいろいろとほのめかしてみる手に頼っている。すなわち、ドナルドは、情緒不安定だとか、世界を破壊する可能性があるとか、その、両方だとか、ＦＢＩ（米連邦捜査局）や、クー・クラックス・クラン（３Ｋ団：南北戦争後に作られた白人優越主義の団体）などを含む、ウラジーミル・プーチンによって管理されている広大なイデオロギーを超えた陰謀に参加している、などと。

　ドナルドは、両党の「トランプ絶対拒否派」をイライラさせ続けており、ついには、国内の反対派ばかりでなく、海外の指導者らに対しても同じように応戦するために、ホームグラウンドを越えて乗り出していく意欲、もっと重要なことに、その能力も明らかに示している。

　トランプ氏は、多くの間違いをし、また、人々を面白がらせるようなことを言ったりしたが、何の効果もなく、貴重な時間を浪費した。こういうのは、新人のやらかすミスで、まだ、学習しなければならないことはたくさんあるのだ。有権者らは、（“経済が重要なんだ、「愚か者」”と言われて、申し訳なく思いつつ）、経済に目を向けており、評論家連中や、甘言持参で集まっている選挙関係者にとっては、あまり重要ではなくても、有権者にとっては重要なことに焦点を絞っている。決定が、当人たちが考えるべきだと思うことを、非常に熱心に皆に知らせたがるプレスやテレビの知ったかぶりする人たちにではなく、有能な人たちの手腕に託されているので、安心だ。一瞬たりとも、ぐずぐずしている時ではない。

And now the fun begins. All that has gone before doesn’t count, or at least not very much. The preliminaries are over, the palookas have been dispatched to undercards elsewhere, and with the passing of Labor Day the candidates, and more important, the voters, can get down to the serious business of choosing a president.

Pundits, junkies and consultants analyzing every move of the wannabes, operatives, lobbyists and fundraisers from the time the candidates threw their hats in the ring. Voters, who have their own lives to lead, only now will begin to think about who they want to put in the White House.

Most of the opinions thrown about over the course of the months and in all those debates were opinions too green to pick, and opinions, like the public-opinion polls, will change as voters give more considered thought to the consequences of how they cast a vote.

This can’t be good news in Clinton, Inc., where the nomination of Donald Trump, an inexperienced businessman was celebrated as something too good to be true. But now, against all odds and expectations, his bluntly stated message – rebuilding the economy, creating good jobs, restoring law on the border, and putting America first – is clearly resonating with a growing number of voters. November 8 is still a good way in the distance with many surprises to come. Many Republicans who a month ago were leery of Donald Trump are finding themselves getting more comfortable with the man. Hillary Clinton continues to stumble, and questions about her greed, her putting her own interests against those of the country – and now her health, all but off-limits only a fortnight or so ago – gather relevance and momentum.

The public-opinion polls, which only a month or so ago predicted a Clinton landslide that might even destroy the Republican Party. Some of the most recent polls give the brash and belligerent Donald not only a chance, but even suggest an edge. The big media, which dispensed with even the pretense of reasoned debate and persuasive argument, have thrown their best shots at Mr. Trump and have yet to bloody his nose or blacken an eye. Hillary’s claque has gone from premature elation to sober caution about taking nothing for granted. Hillary herself has resorted to mindless suggestions that the Donald is either unhinged or likely to destroy the world, or both, having joined a vast cross-ideological conspiracy run by Vladimir Putin that includes the FBI, the Ku Klux Klan.

The Donald continues to frustrate the Never-Trumpers in both parties, by finally demonstrating a willingness and, even more important, an ability to reach beyond his base to meet domestic opponents and foreign leaders as equals. His television commercials so far have not reflected the usual attack ads that are the staple of every campaign.

Mr. Trump has made many mistakes and wasted precious time on distractions that didn’t lead anywhere good. These were the mistakes of a rookie, and he still has something to learn. But that was before Labor Day, mistakes and miscalculations to be forgotten and forgiven as voters turn to the economy (with apologies to Mr. Stupid), and focus on what’s important to them, even if not very important to the pundits and the campaign hangers-on. It’s a relief that the decision is now in capable hands, not those of the know-it-alls of press and tube who are so eager to tell everyone what they should think. Not a moment too soon.
