（フロリダ州）オーランドのゲイのナイトクラブで日曜日に起きた、50人が死亡し、ほかに53人が負傷するという襲撃を受けて、そのような戦慄（せんりつ）すべき行為の後には、オバマ大統領が浮かべるであろうと、米国人が思うようになっていた通りの険しい顔つきをしていた。

　しかし、彼は、すべての米国人――穏健派イスラム教徒、ユダヤ人、キリスト教徒、イスラム教旋舞教団員、あるいはホッテントットなど――がぜひ聞きたいと思っている解決の約束をすることはなかった。大統領が実際に明らかにしていることは、オバマ氏が最高軍司令官でいる限り、国は、より過激なイスラム・テロに対して無防備のままでいるだろう、ということである。月曜日の朝、オーランド大量殺人のために、テレビのスタジオに大急ぎで駆け付け、ガンマン（銃を使って人殺しをした人間）ではなく、銃（があったこと）を非難したヒラリー・クリントンは、自身が熱心な大統領のクローンだということをはっきり示した。

　大統領は、彼のトレードマークである厳かな平伏の姿勢で対応した。「まだ、捜査の初期段階であるが」と断りながら「われわれは、これがテロ行為であり、ヘイト（憎悪）行為だったということは十分承知している」と言った。彼は続けて、大量殺人をガンマンではなく銃のせいにしたのだ。「誰でも、学校や、礼拝所や、映画劇場や、ナイトクラブにいる人々を撃てるような武器に、いかにたやすく手を掛けることができるか、という問題を重ねて、思い起こさせるものだ」と言った。このことは、もっと前に起きたコネティカット州の小学校や、サウスカロライナ州の教会や、またコロラド州の映画劇場で起きた銃乱射事件について言っていることは、見え見えであった。そのどれも、イスラム教徒によって起こされたものではなかったからだ。彼は、米国の大量殺人事件はイスラム過激派の暴力事件とは関係ないということを熱心に広めたいと思っていたのだ。

　オバマ氏のイスラム過激派の暴力事件の原因に対する無関心が、わが国の敵に、米国はもはや戦う意欲がないのだということをはっきり知らせている。「今回の襲撃は、オバマ大統領やクリントン元国務長官の政策によって可能にされたのだ」と、著名な海兵隊大学の軍事理論の教授であるセバスティアン・ゴルカ氏は言った。ヒラリーは月曜日、ついに、良識に一歩譲って「イスラム過激派」という言葉を長い間使うのを拒んでいたことをやめた。しかしながら、大統領は彼の「銃」に関わる説に相変わらず固執している。ドナルド・トランプはその日の早朝、すかさず「大統領は、ついに、イスラム過激派のテロという言葉を使おうとしているのだろうか。もし、そうしなければ、彼は直ちに恥をさらして辞任すべきである」と言った。

　オバマ氏のメッセージは、あらゆるレベルの国家保安機関に浸透しており、その結果が、脅威の証拠に対する組織的無知につながる。そのような次第で、ニダル・ハサン軍医少佐や、ツァルナエフ兄弟が、連邦のテロのレーダーに掛かっていたのに、それぞれ、フォートフッドで銃乱射事件を起こし、ボストン・マラソンを吹き飛ばしたのだ。

　米国の何百万人もの誠実なイスラム教徒は、ねじ曲げられたイスラムの解釈が、われわれの間に死活的危機を拡散してきているという明白な事実に言及することをためらっていては、ひいき目に見られることはない。29歳の米国生まれのガンマン、オマル・マティーンは、イスラム過激派の殺し屋の発生源であるサウジアラビアへの度重なる旅行歴によって警告を促され、連邦捜査局（ＦＢＩ）に少なくとも２回、インタビューされていた。彼が警備員として働いていた所の同僚らは、彼が人々を殺すと脅していたと届け出ていたのに「反イスラム」と呼ばれるのを恐れて上司らは何もしなかった。

　オバマ氏の視点では、オーランド事件も、サンバーナディーノ銃乱射事件のように、イスラム教徒の世界のはみ出し者を刺激するのを避けるための単なる代償にすぎないのである。ヒラリーも同じようなことを相変わらず言っている。もっとはっきりした証拠が必要だという人たちには、オーランド事件が、殺し屋らには頭を下げておけばよいというのは、ファンタジーに基づいた戦略だということを歴然と示している。そのような戦略は、さらなる流血を求める欲望を刺激するだけなのである。

In the wake of the Sunday attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando, with 50 dead and 53 others left wounded, President Obama presented the grim face that Americans have come to expect after such acts of horror.

But he offered no promise of the solution that every American – moderate Muslim, Jew, Christian, whirling dervish or hottentot – yearns to hear. What the president does make clear is that the nation will remain vulnerable to more radical Islamic terror as long as Mr. Obama is the commander in chief. Hillary Clinton, who rushed to the television studios Monday morning to blame guns, not the gunman, for the Orlando massacre, demonstrated that she is his eager clone.

The president responded with his trademark solemn obsequiousness. “Although it’s still early in the investigation,” he said, “we know enough to say this was an act of terrorism and an act of hate.” He went on to chalk up the slaughter to the gun, not the gunman, “a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people in a school, or in a house of worship, or a movie theater, or in a nightclub.” These were not-so-subtle references to earlier shootings at an elementary school in Connecticut, a church in South Carolina, and a movie theater in Colorado, none of which were carried out by a Muslim. He was eager to spread the idea that massacre in America has nothing to do with radical Islamic violence.

Mr. Obama’s indifference to the source of radical Islamic violence demonstrates to the nation’s enemies that America is no longer willing to fight. “This attack was facilitated by the policies of President Obama and Secretary Clinton,” says Sebastian Gorka, a distinguished professor of military theory at the Marine Corps University.

Hillary on Monday finally abandoned her longstanding refusal to use the term “radical Islam,” in a concession to common sense. The president, however, is sticking by his gun(s). Donald Trump seized the moment early in the day: “Is President Obama going to finally mention the words radical Islamic terrorism? If he doesn’t he should immediately resign in disgrace.”

Mr. Obama’s message has filtered down to all levels of his national security apparatus. The result is an institutional blindness to the evidence of threats. That’s how Maj. Nidal Hasan and the Brothers Tsarnaev showed up on the federal terror radar but were left free to shoot up Fort Hood and blow up the Boston Marathon.

Millions of loyal Muslims in America are done no favor by the reluctance to cite the obvious, that a twisted version of Islam has spread mortal danger among us. Omar Mateen, the 29-year-old American-born Orlando gunman, raised red flags with multiple trips to Saudia Arabia, a source of radical Islamic killers, and he was interviewed at least twice by the FBI. Colleagues where he worked as a security guard reported him for threatening to kill people but his bosses did nothing, for fear of being called “anti-Muslim.”

By Mr. Obama’s perspective, Orlando, like San Bernardino, is merely the price Americans must pay to avoid inflaming the misfits in the Muslim world. Hillary promises more of the same. Orlando demonstrates, if more demonstration were needed, that bowing to bullies is a strategy based on fantasy. Such strategy only whets the appetite for more blood.
