40日、およそ40日。それは司法が「スパイゲート」で何かをつかむのに、あと、どのくらいの日数が残されているか、という話である。「スパイゲート」というのは、ドナルド・トランプを倒すための作戦のニックネームである。米国民は、米国のジョン・ダラム検事が文書、起訴状、無罪の証明――のいずれにせよ――フィクションより奇なるロングランの長編小説に決着をもたらせるようなものを出してくれることを首を長くして待っているのだ。早くそうしないと、過去の悪事の疑惑に将来を汚すのを許すことになるのだ。

　「レーバーデー」（労働者の日：９月の第１月曜日に当たる休日）が過ぎれば、現在、ウオーミングアップモードにある2020年大統領選は、フル回転する。その時から、選挙の日まで、投票に影響を及ぼすと見なされるような新事実を公共の場に流すようなことは禁止事項となる。さらなる事実が明らかにされることなく、米国人は、計略を練っている汚れた詐欺師らは、刑務所に入れられるのか、ただ、どん底生活に転落するだけなのか、と、暗い疑惑を抱き続ける以上のことはほとんどなく、投票場に入ることを余儀なくされるであろう。

　昨年の夏の、特別検察官ロバート・モラーの捜査の結論から、トランプの2016年選挙戦とロシアとの間に癒着はなかったということは、十分に確立されている。そして、まだ、新しい情報が、この作り話の背後の陰謀を暴露し続けているのだ。

　先週、機密扱いを解除された文書が、オバマ政権の司法省の担当者らが、トランプが大統領になりそうな可能性をひっくり返そうとしていた活動範囲について新たな詳細を加えている。新しく就任したジョン・ラトクリフ国家情報長官によって公表されたメモは、連邦捜査局（FBI）の捜査官が、2016年の国家安全保障に関わるスパイ防止活動に関するブリーフィングを、スパイ活動の口実として、当時の共和党の被指名者の利益のためと思われるように装い、どのように、利用したかを詳述している。

　公開された書類は、トランプのブリーフィング中にFBI捜査官ジョー・ピエンカによって書かれたメモを含んでいる。それは、また、選挙運動アドバイザーのクリス・クリスティーやマイケル・フリンも含んでいた。同捜査官は、提供された情報に対する出席者の反応を文書化し、そして、彼のメモは、FBIの反トランプ作戦のコードネーム「クロスファイアー・ハリケーン」や、フリン氏を虚偽証言で訴追する元となった秘密捜査のコードネーム「クロスファイアー・レーザー」の記録に交じって浮上したのである。

　非難の痕跡をたどってみると、それは、オバマのホワイトハウスに通じるという疑いを抱いて、トランプ大統領は、ダラムの捜査の遅さ加減に対する不満の声をはばかることなく声に出した。

　2017年１月５日の大統領執務室での「クロスファイアー・ハリケーン」について討論するための会議に出ていた民主党オバマ政権の最高幹部たちの中には、同時に取られ公表されたメモによると、バラク・オバマ大統領、ジョー・バイデン副大統領、ジェームズ・コミーＦＢＩ長官、ジョン・ブレナンＣＩＡ長官、ジェームズ・クラッパー国家情報長官その他がいた。

　保守的監視機関でワシントンに本部のある「法的監視」は先週、「情報公開法」訴訟を、司法省や、FBIや国家情報長官相手に起こし、１月５日会議に関するすべての極めて重要な記録を求めた。

　民主党員は、捜査などは、単に、2020年選挙を前にして、イメージ汚しの企みにすぎないと非難する。ウィリアム・バー司法長官はすでに、法律の力の手も彼らに届く程には十分に強力ではないようだ、と明言した。

　しかし、無料チケットは至る所にばらまかれているので、政治の土台となる法律に対する、まだ残っている信頼も軽視されることになろう。さらに、それは、権力の回廊に、2020年選挙シーズンに、新たな悪事を産み落とすために、相変わらず、安心してたむろしている同じ考えのペテン師らを勇気づけることができるであろう。要するに、暴露によって、仕事を辞める者が出るだろうし、首になる者も出よう。しかし、大統領をその職から追い落とそうとしたために訴追された者はまだいない。

Forty days, give or take a few. That’s how much time is left on the calendar for justice to take hold in “Spygate,” nickname for the operation to take down Donald Trump. Americans wait expectantly for U.S. Attorney John Durham to produce documents, indictments, exonerations － anything － that could bring resolution to a long-running saga stranger than fiction. Failure to act soon would allow suspicions of past wrongdoing to taint the future.
After Labor Day, the 2020 presidential campaign, now in warm-up mode, will kick into high gear. From then on to Election Day, fresh revelations spilling into the public square construed as having an impact upon the vote become a no-no. With no further illumination, Americans would be forced to enter the polling booth with little more than their dark suspicions about whether the dirty tricksters running the scheme belong behind bars or simply in the gutter.

It has been well established from the conclusions of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation last summer that there was no collusion between the Trump 2016 campaign and Russia. Still, new information continues to expose the machinations behind that false narrative.

Documents declassified last week add new details of the extent to which agents of the Obama Justice Department were willing to go to derail a possible Trump presidency. Memos released by newly installed Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe detail how FBI officials used an August 2016 national security counterintelligence briefing, supposedly for the benefit of the then-Republican nominee, as a pretext for spying on him.

Papers made public contain notes written by FBI agent Joe Pientka describing the deception that played out during the course of the Trump briefing, which also included campaign advisers Chris Christie and Michael Flynn. The agent documented the attendees’ responses to information presented and his notes turned up among FBI records for “Crossfire Hurricane,” the code name for the anti-Trump operation, and “Crossfire Razor,” the secret probe leading to the prosecution of Mr. Flynn for lying.

President Trump, harboring suspicions that the trail of blame leads to the Obama White House, isn’t shy about voicing frustration over the snail’s pace of the Durham probe.

Top officials of the Democratic Obama administration present during a Jan. 5, 2017 Oval Office meeting to discuss “Crossfire Hurricane” included President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, FBI Director James Comey, CIA Director John Brennan, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and others, according to notes taken contemporaneously and made public.

Judicial Watch, a Washington-based, conservative watchdog organization, last week filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the Department of Justice, the FBI and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, seeking all records related to the pivotal Jan. 5 meeting.

Democrats charge that the investigation is simply a ploy to tarnish their image ahead of the 2020 election. Attorney General William Barr has already made clear that the long arm of the law isn’t likely long enough to reach them.

Free passes all around, though, would undermine remaining public faith in foundational institutions of government. Furthermore, it could embolden like-minded schemers still ensconced in the corridors of power to hatch fresh mischief during the 2020 election season. After all, while exposure has led some plotters to quit their jobs and others to be fired, no one has yet to be prosecuted for attempting to expel the president from office.
