米国民には１月６日に米議会議事堂で何が起こったか、知る資格がある。だが、ペロシ下院議長の偏見に満ちた議会特別委員会の仕事ぶりを見る限り、下院民主党多数派に期待した方がいいようだ。トランプ前大統領の大統領職を終わらせた2020年の異様な選挙の抗議に絡む出来事に、ペロシ氏や、その他の議会の安全を任された責任ある当局者らが、どのように関与したかを明確にしない限り、出来事の完全な真相は明らかになりそうにない。

　「１月６日の米議会議事堂への襲撃を調査する下院特別委員会」は、27日に調査を開始し、ベニー・トンプソン議長（民主、ミシシッピ州）に、勇気ある「議会議事堂警察」が暴動に対して取った行動の目撃証言を聞き出す機会を与えた。調査開始に当たっての彼の発言は異論の余地のないものだった。「私たちは、今、平和的政権交代が私たちの民主主義の柱としてあり続けることを確実にするために、仕事をする。私たちは、うそつきや詐欺師によって行われた取り返しのつかない仕業をあえて放置するわけにはいかない。これがアメリカ合衆国だ」と述べた。その通りだ。

　委員会は、ペロシ氏がかき集めた「ネバー・トランプ」派の民主党員や、反トランプ派の共和党員らで構成され、裏の目的があることを示している。それにはトランプ氏のロシア疑惑の偽情報をでっち上げた悪名高い人物、シフ下院議員（カリフォルニア州）や、トランプの弾劾を取り仕切ったメリーランド州のラスキン下院議員らが含まれている。ペロシ氏は、共和党員らが、委員の調整を図るのを許さず、ワイオミング州のチェイニー下院議員や、イリノイ州のキンジンガー下院議員といった彼女にとって頼りになる共和党員の肩を持ち、前大統領の擁護者を退けた。

　また、チェイニー氏も愛国的な語調を強めて「１月６日の暴力と原因を調査しないままにしておくことはできない。米国民は、１月６日の計画や準備のことを知っているすべての人に関する完全でオープンな証言を聞く資格がある。私たちは、ここ、議会議事堂で何が起こったか知っておかなければならない」と語った。

　しかしながら、彼女が１月６日の審議に参加した背景に、抑え切れない反トランプ感情があることは明らかだ。Ｇ・Ｗ・ブッシュ政権の副大統領だった父親ディック・チェイニー氏がイラクをめぐって辣腕（らつわん）を振るい、強硬姿勢を取って、結果的には不調だったイラク侵攻をトランプ氏が激しく批判したことで、チェイニー下院議員は外交政策のタカ派として、トランプ氏を厳しく批判せざるを得なかった。

　同様に、民主党が支配する連邦議会は、ワシントンでのあの不安定な１月の日に先立つ出来事に関して偏った見方をはっきり示している。議員らは2020年の投票日の訳の分からない選挙手続きの変更や、前例のない投票用紙の異常の頻発にほとんど関心を示さない。ペンシルベニア、アリゾナ、ミシガン州その他の場所で法的異議申し立てをびくびくしながら却下したりしないで、憲法を支持していたならば、寒い１月の日に、愛国心の強い米国民が、ワシントンで決起集会を行わざるを得ないと感じはしなかったであろう。

　「完全かつオープンな証言」については、１月６日前に議会議事堂の敷地内の安全を確保するために国防総省から申し出があったにもかかわらず、その支援を、ペロシ氏が率いる議会の官僚が愚かにも断ったと伝えられる話の説明も必要だ。暴力を阻止したり、あるいは、暴力を扇動したりする抗議者の中に、連邦捜査局（ＦＢＩ）要員が忍び込んでいたかどうかも、確認すべきである。

　でなければ、国民は、真実をスルーして、事前に決まっている結論に向かってジャンプするカンガルー（いんちき）裁判を目撃することになる。

Americans deserve to know what happened at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. The chances they will find out from the work of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s biased congressional committee, though, are slimmer than the Democrats’ House majority. The unabridged story will not be told unless the speaker and other officials responsible for congressional security unbosom their own roles in the events surrounding a protest of the bizarre 2020 election that ended Donald Trump’s presidency.

The House Select Committee to Investigate the Jan. 6 Attack on the United States Capitol began its probe on Tuesday, providing an opportunity for Chairman Bennie Thompson, Mississippi Democrat, to elicit eye-witness accounts of the riot from brave members of the Capitol Police. His preface was unobjectionable: “We will do our job now to ensure the peaceful transfer of power remains a pillar of our democracy. We cannot allow ourselves to be undone by liars and cheaters. This is the United States of America.” Indeed.

It is the makeup of the speaker’s handpicked collection of Never-Trump Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans that is indicative of her ulterior aims. Included are California Rep. Adam Schiff, a notorious purveyor of Trump-Russia collusion falsehoods, and Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Trump impeachment manager. Mrs. Pelosi allowed no counterbalancing Republicans to serve, rejecting defenders of the former president in favor of reliable GOP renegades, Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois.

Ms. Cheney also struck a patriotic-sounding tone: “We cannot leave the violence of Jan. 6 and its causes uninvestigated. The American people deserve the full and open testimony of every person with knowledge of the planning and preparation for Jan. 6. We must know what happened here at the Capitol.”

Her participation in the Jan. 6 inquisition, however, reveals an irrepressible anti-Trump intent. A foreign policy hawk, she could not help but resent Mr. Trump for his harsh criticism of the equally hawkish and perhaps ultimately futile foreign entanglements that her father, Vice President Dick Cheney, championed in Iraq.

Similarly, the Democrat-controlled Congress demonstrates a biased view of events preceding that volatile January day in Washington. Lawmakers show little interest in bewildering alterations of election procedures and an unprecedented rash of balloting anomalies on Election Day 2020. Had Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan, and elsewhere upheld the Constitution in adjudicating a blizzard of legal challenges rather than timidly dismissing them, patriotic Americans would not have felt compelled to rally in Washington on a cold January day.

“Full and open testimony” requires accounting for the reportedly foolish rejection by congressional officialdom, which Mrs. Pelosi leads, of assistance from the Pentagon to secure the Capitol grounds before Jan. 6. It should also ascertain whether FBI assets were embedded among the protesters to thwart the violence or to instigate it.

Anything less tells Americans that they are witnessing a kangaroo court bounding past the truth toward a preordained conclusion.
